Portrush to Dunluce Castle 8th Jan 2024
One of my little trips I do on a regular basis especially when conditions are this good. It was Minus 3deg 'C' this morning but you would think it was a summers day apart from the sun skimming the Horizon. (this was mid-day) The boat is a P&H Virgo LV Corelite.

Paddlesurf Ireland, Irish Surfkayak and Waveski Competition held at Easky County Sligo. Shows the different conditions competitors had to deal with over the two days. Should be good for personal analysis and the comparison of styles and techniques used. Thanks to the hard work by the Paddlesurf Ireland organisers.

    Best video on RUclips!. Love it!. Paddling a Mojo with Werner paddle, is it worth switching over to a Greenland paddle?.

    • @NormanWoods56
      @NormanWoods56 2 года назад

      Thank you for your comment. Before changing to the Greenland paddle I broke two carbon paddles, one a Werner shogun. On testing greenland paddles I broke only one. The Greenland paddle I use for surfing is beefed up a bit and a lot heavier than a Werner. Since using a greenland paddle I have had no issues with my shoulders as the paddle does not get grabbed and pull you about in big heavy surf. My paddle is now 7 years old and going strong. Hope this helps.

      @@NormanWoods56 Thanks for the reply Norman, very interesting read, have been using a Werner Sherpa for river and surf work here. The day before your reply I jigged my shoulder on the river with it landing me in A&E, nightmare. I understand what you mean about it being grabby in the surf, going to try a greenland paddle, it looks excellent!.

    I got rammed by my rented paddle board up there many many years ago and cracked a rib, that was it for me, in agony and trying to get back in with the least pain possible lol. I've surfed with a sea kayak once up there too but in smaller waves, had some fun but was concerned about the bow digging in and getting flipped 😆 Well done you're very brave!

I like Strangford Lough, preferably the West side. Cheers for the great video guys, loved the surfing at the end 👏

    Is the vessel protected by the Irish Government from people diving down and dismantling the submarine ? As in many comments many torpedoes & weapons still vissable and would make an amazing museum collection or sold on a private scale. Great video photography creating this 🎥🎗️🤗

    • @NormanWoods56
      @NormanWoods56 3 года назад

      Unfortunately it is in International waters off the Irish Coast. If it was in Irish waters it would be protected once it reached 100 years of age. Currently anyone removing an item must report it in the country were they land the item. There is evidence that some items have been removed but generally apart from the damage from being rammed, corrosion of the outer shell and trawler damage, by and large it is surprisingly intact. It is a war grave and personally I only retrieve images and leave only bubbles.

    Would have been really nice to get a wide full shot of the sub so we can easily see the damage the ramming caused and get an idea of exactly how she sank.

    • @NormanWoods56
      @NormanWoods56 3 года назад

      Hi from the timeline at approx 5min 24. You can see extensive damage to the hull and clearly sea the diesel engine and it's valve rockers. Some of which have been damaged. My guess she was rammed from the port side aft of the stern gun through the engine room.

    • @TheSolongsidekick
      @TheSolongsidekick 3 года назад

      @@NormanWoods56 The problem is from close in views it's impossible to tell what's potential damage and what's corrosion.

    • @NormanWoods56
      @NormanWoods56 3 года назад

      To help you get a clearer idea of the damage regarding items which have rusted away and damage that sunk the sub. The strongest part of the sub is the pressure Hull. The shape that you see in pictures of the time, comes from the outer structures that create the decks the bow shape and the stern. On this will be gun platforms for the gunners to stand along with the winter Gardens with anti aircraft guns. Between the decking and the pressure Hull will be air cylinders and buoyancy tanks along with ordnance lockers and liferafts etc. The conning tower would also have an area for the commander and others to stand when on the surface. Generally most of decking etc attached to the pressure Hull will rust away leaving the pressure Hull in tacked with the external cylinders dangling or lying on the seabed. (This is the case with most ww1 subs) From the video you can clearly see the compression Hull forward of the conning tower is in very good condition with no access to the inside bar the forward torpedoe loading hatch. To the rear of the sub above the engine room their is no compression Hull with parts of the starboard side torn out to seaward. (The engine rocker covers are dislodged and missing mostly from the port engine.) The compression Hull on the port side of the engine has a clean large gap leading to the missing top part of the compression Hull. Due to the depth and the direction of the tide and the time I had; on balance I could not risk an attempt to swim away from the wreck and attempt a wide shot that may or may not be possible considering visibility only reached a third to half of the wreck at any given time on the day. I had to stay close to the wreck to prevent being swept away. My swim from the stern to the bow was using the wreck to shelter from the tide which was moving accross the wreck diagonally from the port bow to starboard stern. Images might have been different if I had taken an underwater scooter ;) hope all the above helps.
